The Argument Against Impeaching Donald Trump

The call for President Trump’s impeachment resonates with many Americans concerned about his conduct. However, a pragmatic assessment suggests that pursuing impeachment at this juncture may present significant challenges and unintended consequences.

Impeachment and removal would elevate Vice President J.D. Vance to the presidency. While some may view this as a positive outcome, others hold differing opinions. The potential shift in leadership necessitates careful consideration. Is the nation prepared for a Vance presidency, and how might that impact the political landscape? This question alone should give pause to those considering impeachment.

As is, during President Trump’s Super Bowl interview with Bret Baier of Fox News, the President stated in no uncertain terms that he didn’t consider Vance to be his successor despite being a highly capable individual. While his statement could arguably be dissected a number of different ways, if President Trump has any lack of confidence in J.D. Vance, there’s a good argument the American people might want to consider that fact before walking down the path of an impeachment inquiry that could ultimately result in a Vance presidency.

Another issue that should arguably be considered is that impeachment inquiries are costly endeavors, demanding substantial time, resources, and political capital. Given the Republican control of the Senate, a conviction appears highly improbable at this time. While the historical record established through such proceedings holds value, the question remains: is the expenditure justified?

It’s true that the previous impeachments of President Trump created a detailed record of his actions. However, despite this record, the American people re-elected him. This raises a fundamental question: if the electorate chooses to return a president to office despite documented controversies, to what extent should Congress override that decision?

Many of the most concerning aspects of President Trump’s past were public knowledge prior to the 2024 election. His 34 felony convictions, two prior impeachments, association with Jeffrey Epstein, and the implications of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report (much of which was based on pre-election information, even if the report wasn’t released until after the election) were all part of the public discourse.

The American people, aware of these factors, still elected Donald Trump. This decision, however controversial, reflects the will of the electorate. Respecting the electoral process is a cornerstone of our democracy. Therefore, impeaching President Trump for actions and information known before the election could be seen as undermining the public’s choice.

An impeachment attempt, particularly one unlikely to result in conviction, also risks further deepening the nation’s political divide. It could exacerbate partisan tensions and undermine public trust in governmental institutions. The focus on impeachment might also divert attention from other pressing issues that demand legislative action.

Rather than pursuing impeachment, Congress could explore alternative avenues for oversight and accountability. These might include:

  • Robust congressional investigations: Focused inquiries into specific areas of concern could provide transparency and hold the executive branch accountable without the full-scale process of impeachment.
  • Legislative action: Congress could enact laws to address potential abuses of power and strengthen checks and balances.
  • Public discourse and civic engagement: Encouraging open dialogue and informed debate can foster a more engaged and responsible citizenry.

While the arguments for impeachment are compelling, a balanced assessment necessitates considering the potential consequences. The succession issue, the cost and likelihood of conviction, the outcome of the 2024 election, and the risks of further polarization all warrant careful consideration.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to pursue impeachment rests with Congress. However, a thorough examination of these factors is essential for making an informed and responsible choice.
